Head Choir Director
Mr. Surratt will be starting his 10th year of teaching this 2024-25 school year and his second year of high school choir at C.E. King High School. Before teaching High School choir, he taught middle school choir (2020-2022) and elementary music (2015-2020). Mr. Surratt comes from a family of musicians. His mother was his elementary music and middle school choir director, his brother is the Head Choir Director at Null Middle School, his sister is currently living in London performing Opera and his father is a DJ. Mr. Surratt grew up most of youth in Texas City and Alvin, Texas. He moved to the Houston Area during high school and graduated from North Shore Senior High. He then attended Stephen F. Austin State University where he studied Music Education and developed his love for Vocal Pedagogy and Opera. In his free time, Mr. Surratt enjoys watching anime, spending time with his friends and family, singing and playing with his dogs.
Assistant Choir Director
Ms. Cruz is very excited for her 2nd year of teaching at CE King High School! She grew up in Katy, Texas, and is a product of the strong choir program at Obra D. Tompkins High School in Katy ISD. Ms. Cruz graduated from Texas State University in 2021 with her bachelor's degree in Choral Studies, and she recently graduated from Texas Woman's University with her master's degree in Music Education. At TWU, she worked as the Choral and Music Education graduate assistant where she directed the TWU University Chorus and taught lessons in Choral Conducting, Secondary Choral Methods, and Women in Music. She is a proud Filipina-American and will be presenting her research about Music Education and Asian American students at the National Association for Music Educators convention this October. Ms. Cruz loves anime, K-pop, her three-legged cat, and CHOIR!
